A special time to have a family photoshoot
Welcome to my blog, where I’m showcasing a newborn photoshoot in Dulwich, South-East London, with a baby girl who was just a few weeks old at the time of the session. Mum and Dad weren’t too keen on posing in front of the camera, but they appreciated some gentle direction.
Before the session, we had an online pre-consultation (which is included with all my newborn photoshoots). Investing time to get to know my clients beforehand is an essential part of my preparation. It helps both me and—most importantly—my clients feel comfortable and relaxed when I turn up at their home with my camera.
We started with a few photographs on their sofa, cuddling the baby, but then decided to break the ice even more by having a cup of tea. Anyone who’s had a baby remembers the days of half-finished cups of cold tea scattered around the house, and that’s exactly what happened! Tea left unfinished, we moved on to the bedroom for more cuddles and the occasional soothing.
As she was still very young, the baby slept for most of the session. As with all my photoshoots, I didn’t suggest any poses or set up prompts but gave a little guidance to make the most of the natural light in their home. As a natural light photographer, I wasn’t concerned about the overcast sky on the day. In fact, I love the soft, diffused light you get indoors from a cloudy sky, as you can see from the photos below.
This client said: “Oh wow!! Thank you SO much - we absolutely love all of the photos. You have captured a very special time in our lives just perfectly! We really love the way you’ve captured the light on our faces, and natural moments of us together as a family. Thanks also for making us feel at ease even though we are not naturals in front of a camera.”
One of my regrets is that I don’t have any decent photographs of my children when they were babies. Having a newborn photoshoot is such a special opportunity to capture those fleeting, precious early moments when your baby is still so tiny, preserving the magic and emotion of this once-in-a-lifetime stage forever.
