Unposed and candid family portraits at home
There is staged candid. And there is candid candid.
Families who reach out to me for a photoshoot often tell me that they would like some natural-looking family photos. If this is you, read on.
There are two ways of capturing natural family portraits: you stage them to look candid, or they simply ARE CANDID.
The first way is what lifestyle photographers do, using prompts, giving direction and setting up the photo for success (pretty light, matching outfits, neat background). The second way is what documentary family photographers do. It’s what I do.
The portraits shown here have one thing in common: I didn’t set them up. I didn’t position my subjects, I didn’t tell them where to look or what to do.
The challenge with capturing these portraits is that, due to their unposed nature, you can’t create them. I didn’t turn up and had these photos unfolding in front of me. These portraits were taken during longer documentary family sessions in London.
These portraits unfolded in the home environment doing ordinary family activities, like playing in the garden or in the park.
The benefits of these authentic family portraits is that they are REAL. The emotions are real, the fun is real, the connection is real. And it shows.
That’s why my clients decide to hang them on their walls or print them in an album. Depicting the family’s home and spaces, and genuine moments, these photographs become precious heirlooms of great sentimental value.
