15 ideas for activities to capture during your London family photoshoot

What do you love doing as a family when you don’t have anything else to do?

This is the question I pose to my clients when they’re thinking about what they want me to capture during their unposed, reportage-style family photoshoot. It helps us focus on moments that feel authentic and meaningful to each family. Whether it’s a favourite pastime, a quirky tradition, or part of your everyday life, the goal is to showcase what makes your family uniquely you.

Before a session, I ask my clients to think of four or five activities they love doing together as a family—what I call a ‘bank of activities.’ Here are some ideas to inspire your own reportage-style photoshoot.

Activities

  • Bubbles in the garden – A simple, joyful way to capture movement and smiles.

  • Play a board game – Perfect for cosy indoor moments.

  • Roller skating on the road – Fun, energetic, and great for action shots.

  • Walk to the park – Ideal for families with dogs or for a picnic on a warm day.

  • Baking together – Floury hands and sweet treats make for beautiful, story-filled photos.

  • Football in the garden – A classic activity for the football fanatics in the family!

  • Gardening – Whether it’s quiet or messy, it’s equally fun.

  • Dressing-up games – Bring out the costumes for a playful and creative session.

  • Playing with toys – Whether it’s building with blocks or cuddling a favourite stuffed animal, these moments are all about connection and preserving memories.

  • Painting or drawing – A creative activity that adds a pop of colour and personality to your images.

Routines

I’m a big fan of capturing ordinary family routines—moments you wouldn’t normally have photos of but that are full of fun, love, and connection.

  • Feeding or brunch – Whether it’s feeding your newborn or gathering for a family brunch, these are lovely moments of togetherness.

  • Nap time – Peaceful, tender shots of putting your baby down for a nap.

  • Bath time – Perfect for capturing giggles and splashy fun.

  • Story time – Quiet moments of connection as you read together.

  • Your unique routines – Stopping by your favourite café, feeding the ducks at the park, visiting the local library—do you have a family ritual you’d love captured? These are short phases that won’t last forever.
